Anglesey is world renowned as the ancestral home of the ancient Druids. On our guided bike tour, we combine visiting some of the best of Angleseyâs prehistoric remains with some lovely cycling with fantastic views. We travel through a Neolithic, to Romano-British, Bronze and Iron Age landscape to visit archaeological sites which were doubtless, significant to the early Celts.
The Druidsâ sacred oak groves may be gone, but enigmatic remnants of their culture remain in the form of standing stones, burial chambers and the remains of homes and defended communities. These continue to tantalize us.
A significant landscape
The island boasts more ancient monuments per square mile than any other part of the UK. On this cycle ride, we follow the Braint valley, home to Angleseyâs longest river. This was a significant river valley for the early Celts, which is reflected in the number of prehistoric remains which scatter the valley and look outwards towards the mountain and mountain passes of Eryri (Snowdonia).
As we begin our guided bike tour, you will enjoy interesting and rewarding views towards Eryri as we cycle along the shore of the Menai Strait. We then turn inland to visit four sites: Caeâr Leb, Bodowyr Burial Chamber, and the Romano-British Castell Bryn Gwyn and its associated standing stones. Saving the best till last, or final visit of the day is to Bryn Celli Ddu, Angleseyâs most important and iconic prehistoric site.
After this, cycle back towards the coast and follow a delightful, short off-road track (which can be walked or cycled) back to our start location.
Bring your adventurous spirit! There is around 1 mile of walking along public footpaths through fields to access a couple of the sites. This may include passing through fields containing horses and cattle, mud, and in some seasons, nettles, so we suggest long trousers!
Though it may sound daunting, this is an exciting tour, with some great ârevealsâ which wonât disappoint you as we reach different sites.

We had a wonderful day exploring the southern prehistoric sites of Anglesey. Beautiful countryside, views of Snowdonia and the Menai Straits. Eli was great company and looked after us and our safety very well. The cycling route had been well planned and was mainly in flat, quiet lanes. Highly recommended.
